2023 Royal College of Art Helen Hamlyn Fixperts Award Winner

2023 Winner! Trike for Zara

Zara loves cycling, she is a hind-quarter amputee and has been looking for a suitable seat that would reduce friction, allow her to balance well and not cause bruises. She posted her interest on a Facebook group called LimbPower and two design students on a Fixperts course at Ravensbourne University London contacted her. Working closely with Zara on various approaches and trying out prototypes they came up with a unique principle for a new type of seat. Instead of a cushioned form which the body has to adapt to, they proposed a hammock structure which forms itself around the body shape allowing Zara to sit properly in the centre, making it easier for her to balance. During the project, the entrepreneurial students also contacted the Douglas Bader Foundation who generously donated an electric trike on which the new hammock seat is now installed.
